Natural History & Ecology
The trail showcases the last remaining stands of Torrey pines (Pinus torreyana), one of the rarest pine species in North America, found only here and on Santa Rosa Island. The ecosystem supports diverse coastal sage scrub habitat, including California sagebrush, black sage, and endemic wildflowers that bloom spectacularly in spring. Wildlife spotters may encounter western fence lizards, dolphins offshore, and numerous migratory seabirds.

Trail Experience & Conditions
The well-maintained network combines packed dirt paths with wooden stairs and viewing platforms. Hikers traverse dramatic sandstone cliffs, wind through shaded pine groves, and can descend to secluded beaches. Morning marine layer often creates mystical conditions, burning off to reveal spectacular coastal views. Trail surface varies from compact dirt to sandy sections, with some moderately steep portions requiring careful footing.
Practical Information &Tips
Parking available at both North and South lots ($10-15/day), with the North lot offering easier beach access. Early morning visits (before 9am) recommended to avoid crowds and secure parking. Restrooms, water fountains, and visitor center available at the trailhead. No dogs allowed on trails. Best photographed during golden hour, with whale watching opportunities during migration seasons (December-April). Bring layers as coastal conditions can change quickly.
