The summit area showcases remarkable rock formations created by erosion and weathering, with the famous Potato Chip Rock extending dramatically into space. On clear days, views extend from the Pacific Ocean to the Cuyamaca Mountains, with occasional snow-capped peaks visible in winter.
Hiking Experience & Challenges
A steady climb on well-maintained but steep fire road transitions to more technical single-track near the summit. Multiple false summits challenge hikers mentally, while the exposed terrain offers little shade. The final approach to Potato Chip Rock involves basic bouldering moves. Weekend queues for photos at the rock can exceed an hour, but sunrise visits often avoid crowds.
Preparation & Logistics
Lake Poway parking ($10 non-resident weekend fee) opens at 6am. Restrooms and water available at trailhead. Bring minimum 3 liters water per person. Best photographed mid-morning to early afternoon for optimal lighting on the rock. Start early in summer months to avoid peak heat. Dogs allowed on leash but may struggle with final rock scramble. Emergency call boxes located along trail.
